Completion of courses in a Lesley University advanced degree or certificate program may qualify you for endorsements or add-on licenses in your home state. Common areas of add-on endorsement alignment with Lesley’s off-campus and online programs include the following. Click on any of interest to see the requirements for your state.
- Mathematics (grades 1-8)
- Science (grades 1-8)
- Instructional Technology (grades K-12)
- Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (grades K-12)
- Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Online Teaching (grades K-12)
- Special Education
There are four primary ways in which endorsements can be added:
- In many states, teacher licensing agencies evaluate completion of content competencies based upon the analysis of graduate-level courses taken in the endorsement field. In these cases, it is wise to seek out endorsement requirements ahead of time to ensure they are contained within the selected Lesley course(s). In these states, you will apply directly to your state licensing agency, submitting official copies of your transcripts and course descriptions with the application.
- In some states, institutional verification is the common form of granting additional endorsements/areas of license. In these states, Lesley University’s Certification officer signs a form verifying completion of a Massachusetts-approved or Washington-approved teacher licensure program which may then be approved through reciprocity by your home state.
- In a few states, a student may earn an endorsement through content testing. In this case, a student may take a Lesley program to help prepare for the successful passage of the test. The subject area test may differ in each state; however, a common test many states use is the Praxis Series Test.
- In other states, Lesley University has been directly approved by the teacher licensing agency to offer additional endorsements/areas of licensure for teachers working in that state.
State Education Agencies
As state requirements for “in-field” and “new-field” endorsements vary, it is important to seek current information from your state’s teacher licensing agency on qualifications for earning additional credentials. Please keep in mind that qualifying for state endorsement is not automatic and not guaranteed by Lesley University. Each state may have additional requirements, including testing, courses, workshops, or other assessments.
